In the fall of 2008, Gretchen pulled her 5-, 9- and 11-year-old children out of their public elementary school for the trip of a lifetime. For three months, they roamed the United States in a 22-foot RV, crossing 19 states, logging more than 10,000 miles and visiting over 50 national and historical landmarks. While her husband stayed home for work, offering emotional and logistical support from afar, Gretchen home-schooled the kids on the road, turning the country into their classroom. Her triumph as solo-everything on the trip—driver, leader, planner, parent, teacher, blackwater expert, cook and bottle washer—has inspired other women to take bold, adventurous leaps of their own. A graduate of U.C. Berkeley and author of the eBook How to Plan an Amazing, Kid-Friendly, RV Adventure, Gretchen resides in San Diego with her family.
